Crafting Organic Ciders in Seattle

we’re building a cider house. CHEERS!

Our goal is to create a space and a cider that can be easily enjoyed. With a casual seating area and creative ciders, Jötunn Ciderhouse will be a welcoming spot for everyone. Today, we consistently make ciders we are proud of using organic Washington apple juice and adding fun and local ingredients.  We have a strong business plan and are on the path to making it a reality.

This is our cider pictured on our balcony in Capitol Hill. We’re renting an overpriced one bedroom apartment. I’m assuming you are too, or you have friends that are. I grew up in Seattle, I love this city, but I’ve always lived in a place too small to have much of a party, Chris has experienced this his whole adult life as well. And we like good tasting things that don’t hit our wallet too hard. Our dream is to make average (I mean, you’re exceptional) people like us happy.

Jötunns are Odin’s outcast monster brethren in Norse mythology. Giant mountain trolls with superhuman powers.

The Pacific Northwest has heavy ties to Scandinavia, and because of Chris’s sweet Norwegian grandma, I got into old Norse stories. I wanted to really like Iðunn, she’s the goddess of the magical apple tree of youth that keeps the Gods from aging, but I just found the jötunn more endearing. Er, maybe relatable? Interesting. That’s it.

The day beautiful and powerful Odin was born, he turned around and kicked out his ugly older siblings and sent them to Jötunheimr.  They can be clever and mischievous and they never give up their fight against the Gods.

It’s a bit more understandable than being born a God.

The Core of Our Purpose

  • Create a chill space for people to make friends, hang-out, and forget whatever troubles them

  • Produce and serve exciting and tasty ciders

  • Be as organic and local as possible: have a conscience so that you can give yours a rest

Why the name jötunn?

Thirteen years ago, we had nothing but a love for cider and a dream to share it with others. Today, after years of learning, experimenting, failing, and scrubbing, we’re on the brink of sharing our handcrafted passion with you.

ALWAYS ORGANIC

We’ve always used organic apple juice, we started with the more affordable Trader Joe’s, mostly to learn with. Now we’ve moved on to nicer local brands and have even ordered big buckets of it. Our goal is to always stay organic, because it just feels right and it tastes great.

NATURAL INGREDIENTS

We love using ingredients like teas, herbs, and spices to  enhance and add complexity and originality to our ciders.

meet the founders

Hey! This is Chris and I’m Angie. We met at UW and graduated right as the economy bottomed out in 'O7. Chris eventually fought his way into a research lab, and I worked in various cafes in the area.

We loved having cider when visiting Portland. At the time, there wasn’t much of a cider scene in Seattle, and we thought we’d fix that by making it ourselves.

Turns out, experience working in a lab helps when learning to make cider. Apart from comprehending fermentation books, Chris is obsessive about everything being clean, sterile, and reproducible. It makes our ciders very consistent.

I love a tasty drink, and I love being creative about what our next cider is going to be. But that’s only half of it. It’s about people. Sharing drinks with others, hearing from others, and being apart of their life, is what all this is for. I hope that we can get this up and running as soon as possible so we can meet you and enjoy sharing something good.
